Scientists from the University of Oxford (Great Britain) analysed the data of half a million men and discovered that alcohol consumption can increase the risk of developing 60 diseases.

Meanwhile, while a number of diseases, such as liver, colon, and rectal cancer, have long been known and recognised by the WHO, the majority of the newly discovered diseases were previously unknown.

Fractures, lung cancer, as well as diseases of blood circulation organs, gout, cataracts, stomach ulcers, bronchitis of unknown aetiology, heart ischemia, arthrosis, and systemic connective tissue diseases were among the 33 diseases never previously associated with alcohol consumption. Furthermore, even a small amount of alcohol can have such negative consequences.

The researchers looked at information from a Chinese database that contained information on 512,000 men and women over the age of 12, with an average age of 52. The database contained detailed information about Chinese residents' bad habits.

A third of men drank alcohol on a regular basis, at least once a week, compared to only 2% of women. As a result, women were used as a control group to confirm that the increased risk of disease in men is due to alcohol consumption rather than a genetic variant-related mechanism.

The findings of the study were published in the journal Nature Medicine and include 60 diseases, the risk of which increases with the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
