In a decisive move to strengthen food safety standards and protect public health, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has mandated a 100% inspection of all packaged drinking water manufacturing facilities across Maharashtra. The directive aims to ensure strict compliance with hygiene and safety regulations in light of growing concerns over water quality.

The announcement was made during a recent review meeting led by FSSAI CEO G. Kamala Vardhana Rao. Emphasizing the importance of regular monitoring, Rao called for bi-annual compliance checks at every packaged water unit operating in the state. The initiative is part of a broader push by the regulatory body to tighten surveillance and uphold safety benchmarks in the food and beverage sector.

Alongside packaged water facilities, Rao also stressed the need to elevate hygiene standards among street food vendors—a segment that serves millions daily but often falls outside formal regulation. Encouraging the adoption of good hygiene practices, he highlighted the importance of inclusive food safety reforms that reach both formal and informal food sectors.

During the same meeting, Maharashtra's Food Safety Commissioner Rajesh J. Narvekar shared updates on recent achievements in the state. Notably, the FSSAI's 'Eat Right Place of Worship' certification was conferred upon the Swamy Samarth Trust and the Shirdi Sai Baba Temple. The recognition celebrates their efforts in maintaining food safety and hygiene within places of worship that serve large volumes of community meals.

The FSSAI’s latest directive marks a firm step toward strengthening regulatory oversight and fostering a culture of food safety—from bottled water units to sacred kitchens—underscoring the agency’s commitment to safeguarding consumer health across all levels of food consumption.
