The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has ordered the immediate closure of RB Store, a well-known bakery located in Shillong’s bustling Police Bazaar, after it was found using newspapers to wrap bread and cakes — a practice that contravenes national food safety regulations.

Established in 1950, RB Store has been a popular destination for baked goods in the state capital. However, during a recent inspection, officials discovered that the bakery was using printed newspapers for packaging — a banned material due to the toxic chemicals in ink that can leach into food and pose serious health risks.

“This is a matter of public health. Using newspaper for wrapping food is a clear violation of hygiene standards and can have harmful consequences,” an FSSAI official said.

In addition to RB Store, four other food establishments — including Arun Hotel, Maa Kali Hotel, and two fast food joints — were also shut down for similar breaches of food safety norms. The closures come as part of a larger crackdown by FSSAI, which has been intensifying inspections across the state in recent months.

The inspections have uncovered widespread non-compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Depending on the severity of violations, penalties can range from hefty fines of up to 5 lakh to imprisonment for endangering public health. Repeat offenders also risk license cancellation and legal action.

The FSSAI has confirmed that further surprise inspections will be conducted in the coming weeks as part of its ongoing effort to uphold food safety standards and protect consumers.

The crackdown underscores the growing emphasis on food hygiene and regulatory compliance, especially as health and safety concerns gain increasing prominence among consumers and authorities alike.
