India is preparing to co-host the Second WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine from December 17 to 19 in New Delhi, positioning itself at the forefront of international efforts to advance traditional and integrative healthcare. The summit is being organised jointly by the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Ayush.

This year’s theme, “Restoring Balance: The Science and Practice of Health and Well-Being,” reflects the growing global interest in traditional medicine and its potential to support modern public health systems. Delegations from over 100 countries are expected to participate in high-level discussions, expert panels, and exhibitions focused on innovation, scientific validation, safety and the integration of traditional practices into mainstream healthcare.

At a pre-summit briefing in New Delhi, Union Minister for Ayush Prataprao Jadhav highlighted India’s leadership in the field, crediting the country’s rich heritage and recent scientific advances that have strengthened the global credibility of traditional medicine. Senior officials stressed the importance of developing strong research frameworks, quality standards and safety protocols to align traditional practices with international expectations.

The summit aims to support the goals of the WHO’s upcoming Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034, which seeks to promote safe, effective and evidence-based use of traditional and complementary medicine worldwide. A major focus will be on fostering global collaboration to enhance research, regulation and innovation.

In addition to ministerial dialogues and scientific sessions, the event will feature an extensive exhibition showcasing diverse healing traditions, emerging technologies and new research. Participants will also explore how digital tools and scientific methodologies can accelerate the integration of traditional knowledge into global health systems.

Seen as a pivotal moment for traditional medicine, the summit underscores India’s expanding role in shaping a more holistic, culturally rooted and scientifically supported approach to healthcare worldwide.
