India will present its advancements in universal health coverage, emergency preparedness, and digital health at the World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, starting May 27.
Official sources confirmed that the country will also introduce the Arogya Maitri Disaster Management Cube, a portable hospital, at this prominent global health event organized by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The 77th session of the WHA, running from May 27 to June 1, will see participation from representatives of 194 countries. The Indian delegation will be led by Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The theme for this year's assembly is "All for Health, Health for All," emphasizing a collective approach to global health challenges.
The assembly will feature sessions across three main committees: Plenary, Committee A, and Committee B. The Plenary session will mark the opening of the Health Assembly, attended by health ministers and heads of delegations from 194 nations.
India has been given the role of chairing Committee A, where discussions will focus on issues such as universal health coverage, public health emergency preparedness, anti-microbial resistance, climate change, and sustainable financing for WHO. Committee B will address internal and external audit matters, budgeting, and financing issues concerning WHO.
Alongside the main sessions, at least 14 side events and several strategic roundtables are scheduled. These events will cover a wide range of health topics, wherein participants will share insights and propose directions for enhancing the global health framework.
Beyond the chairing responsibilities, India's leadership extends to spearheading the Regional One Voice initiative for Southeast Asia. This initiative focuses on promoting well-being and health, addressing social determinants of health, improving maternal, infant, and young child nutrition, and exploring the intersection of economics and health for comprehensive healthcare access.
India aims to play a significant role in fostering a more resilient global health ecosystem, and this participation will showcase the country's commitment to advancing its healthcare system and contributing to global health discussions.
