The Government of Russia has recently made updates to the Federal Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Genetic Technologies, extending its duration from 2019-2027 to 2030. In order to achieve a world-class level of research, the federal budget has allocated 8.8 billion rubles to establish and expand state-of-the-art scientific laboratories and genomic research centers. The National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute" will receive and utilize these funds.
As per the updated program, Russia aims to create a network of 80 research infrastructure facilities, including genomic research centers (previously 65), by the year 2030. Additionally, the extension of the program has resulted in an increase in the production of genetic technologies from 36 to 50 during this period. It is projected that by 2030, 36 drugs will be developed, up from the previous target of 20 by 2023.
The Federal Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Genetic Technologies was initially approved in April 2019, with an estimated total funding requirement of 127 billion rubles. The primary objective of the program is to address the challenges associated with the accelerated development of genetic technologies, including genetic editing technologies.
