Modi urges Putin to move from ‘endless war’ to peace, reiterates India’s support for Ukraine peace efforts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war, urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to move away from what he described as an “endless war” towards an end to hostilities.
Modi made the appeal during his bilateral meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. He reiterated India’s consistent position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the way forward in resolving conflicts.
During the meeting, Modi said India supports all efforts aimed at bringing peace to the region and would continue to do so. He emphasised that the continuation of war has wider consequences for humanity, while every move towards peace offers renewed hope.
“We must move from endless war to the end of war, to the cessation of hostilities,” Modi said, underlining the importance of resolving all issues through peaceful means.
The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s identity as the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Gautama Buddha, saying the country’s message is one of peace and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
The meeting also covered the broader India-Russia relationship, with the two leaders reviewing progress in bilateral cooperation across areas including defence and energy. They exchanged views on key regional and global developments, including conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region, which have affected maritime trade as well as the safety and security of Indian seafarers.
The discussions come amid continuing efforts to find a resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which began in February 2022. India has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomacy as the means to resolve the crisis.
Modi and Putin are expected to meet again in India, with the Russian President scheduled to visit the country for the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12 and 13, 2026.
