The Neeri lab discovered the FU.1 Omicron variant in a COVID positive sample from a Gadchiroli woman. The variant has been found in 28 COVID positive patients, 14 of whom are from Maharashtra. According to officials, the rest have been seen in Delhi and Gujarat.

The variant emerged as a result of a mutation in the Omicrian sublineage XBB.1.16, which has recently become a dominant variant. The XBB.1.16 variant was responsible for the increase in COVID cases between January and April of this year.

The lab sequenced 96 COVID positive samples from labs in Gadchiroli, Nagpur, Chandrpur, and Bhandara. XBB.1.16 was discovered in 69 of these.
