Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where the two leaders explored opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation across a range of strategic sectors.
The discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, traditional medicine including Ayurveda, and digital public infrastructure. Notably, India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system was a key topic, reflecting growing global interest in India’s digital innovations.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both leaders were said to have exchanged views on areas such as disaster management, capacity building, and holistic healthcare. They also reaffirmed their commitment to deeper multilateral engagement and pledged to work together on pressing issues affecting the Global South — particularly in the domains of public health, climate change, and pandemic preparedness.
Highlighting the significance of the meeting, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared on X (formerly Twitter), “PM Narendra Modi met with President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez of Cuba on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Both leaders exchanged views on various facets of the India-Cuba relationship, including economic cooperation, biotechnology, pharma, Ayurveda, Digital Public Infrastructure, UPI, disaster management, and capacity building.”
India and Cuba share a longstanding diplomatic relationship rooted in shared values of solidarity and development. The latest engagement signals a renewed momentum in that partnership, particularly as both nations seek to leverage innovation and collaboration to address global challenges.
