In a significant push to strengthen India’s healthcare infrastructure beyond metro cities, Premji Invest has announced a strategic investment in NewEra Hospitals, a Maharashtra-based multi-specialty hospital platform, to scale high-quality and advanced medical care across the state.
The investment, the size of which remains undisclosed, will be used to fund an ambitious expansion plan that includes setting up three new hospitals in Nagpur. This will more than double NewEra’s current capacity from around 350 beds to nearly 800, marking a major step toward addressing the region’s persistent shortage of hospital beds and critical care facilities.
Founded in 2016 by doctors Anand Sancheti, Nilesh Agrawal, and Nidheesh Mishra, NewEra Hospitals currently operates two facilities in Nagpur and one in Navi Mumbai. The network has built a strong clinical reputation in complex specialties such as neurosciences, organ transplants, and cardiology areas that require highly specialized infrastructure and expertise.
The fresh capital infusion is aimed at deepening access to quaternary care advanced, high-complexity treatments that are often limited to large urban centres. By expanding in a city like Nagpur, the partnership seeks to bridge structural gaps in India’s healthcare delivery system, particularly in tier-II regions where demand for quality care continues to outpace supply.
Industry experts note that such investments reflect a broader trend of rising private capital flowing into India’s healthcare sector, especially in underserved markets. With increasing disease burden, growing insurance penetration, and rising patient expectations, hospital platforms are under pressure to expand both capacity and capability.
Premji Invest, the investment arm backed by billionaire Azim Premji, has a strong track record in healthcare, having previously backed major players such as Manipal Hospitals and MedPlus. Its latest bet on NewEra underscores confidence in regionally focused hospital platforms that combine clinical depth with scalable infrastructure.
For NewEra Hospitals, the partnership signals a new phase of growth. The founders have reiterated their vision of making high-end medical care more accessible, emphasizing that quality healthcare should not remain confined to India’s largest cities.
As the expansion unfolds, the collaboration is expected to not only strengthen Maharashtra’s healthcare ecosystem but also set a template for scaling advanced care delivery in emerging urban centres across the country.
