Rainbow Children’s Medicare Limited (RCML), a leading pediatric and maternal care hospital chain, has announced a significant expansion into Northeast India by acquiring a controlling stake in Guwahati-based Pratiksha Hospital. Valued at ₹171 crore, the deal will see RCML take over 76% ownership of the 150-bed multi-specialty facility, while the founding Sharma family retains the remaining 24%.
Financials & Deal Structure
This acquisition, which is being fully funded through RCML’s existing cash reserves and internal accruals, represents a major strategic investment for the Hyderabad-based chain.
What This Means for RCML
Post-acquisition, RCML’s combined bed capacity across its network will expand to 2,185 beds spread over 21 hospitals across eight cities. The Guwahati facility will be rebranded as “Pratiksha Rainbow Children’s Hospital” and fully integrated into Rainbow's broader system of care, enhancing referrals and specialty care across its regional hubs in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, and New Delhi.
Regional Significance & Vision
Founded in 1995 by Dr. Pramod Kumar Sharma—an esteemed pioneer in IVF and minimally invasive gynecological surgery in Northeast India—the hospital delivered its first IVF baby in February 1997, cementing its regional reputation.
Dr. Ramesh Kancharla, Chairman and Managing Director of RCML, highlighted that this partnership will significantly enhance access to high-quality pediatric and maternal healthcare in Assam and the broader Northeast region.
A deeper strategic rationale comes from Dr. Kancharla himself, who notes the region's rising birth rates and demographic trends make it ripe for expansion. Instead of building a new facility from scratch, RCML has opted to strengthen its footprint by partnering with an established local provider—a move he describes as culturally aligned and operationally advantageous.
Why It Matters
This acquisition marks RCML’s bold entry into a fast-growing and underserved region. The Northeast’s favorable demographic profile, along with ongoing infrastructure investments, positions it as a key growth frontier. With this move, Rainbow expands beyond its traditional southern stronghold—anchoring its presence in the high-potential Northeast.
