Three meningitis patients are being treated in the intensive care unit of Bishkek Infectious Diseases Hospital, according to the hospital's head physician, Gulzhigit Aaliev.
The meningitis situation remains tense. Since the beginning of the year, two children have died in the hospital as a result of the infection.
"Many people take medications on their own and end up in the hospital in critical condition." The infection affects both children and adults. "A 64-year-old meningitis patient is currently in intensive care," he said.
The Disease Prevention Department previously reported 55 cases of bacterial meningitis in 4 months.
Meningococcal infection is spread through airborne droplets. A sick person is the source of infection; infection occurs through close contact and communication at a close distance.
