In a bid to revitalise traditional knowledge systems and create new avenues for employment, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched a comprehensive initiative centred around ‘Panchgavya’—a traditional Ayurvedic formulation composed of five cow-derived products: milk, curd, ghee, urine, and dung.
Announced on Monday, the scheme aims to integrate Panchgavya-based products—such as medicinal ointments, toothpastes, and herbal formulations—into the mainstream Ayurvedic system. These products will now be produced at scale, signalling a shift toward blending ancient wisdom with modern healthcare practices.
According to the official release, the initiative is multi-pronged in its goals: it seeks to stimulate the rural economy, support and expand cow shelters (gaushalas), preserve indigenous medicinal knowledge, and provide employment across multiple levels—from production and research to distribution.
A key component of the programme is the therapeutic application of cow urine-based formulations in the treatment of 19 diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular ailments, arthritis, respiratory conditions like asthma and sinusitis, skin disorders, and anaemia. These treatments will be developed and promoted under the guidance of the AYUSH Department, which is collaborating with the UP Gauseva Commission to ensure scientific validation and effectiveness.
Dr. Anurag Srivastava, Officer on Special Duty at the UP Gauseva Commission, noted that efforts are underway to develop these medicines using modern research methodologies. The focus is on aligning traditional healing practices with evidence-based approaches to enhance their credibility and wider acceptance.
As demand for Panchgavya products is expected to grow, the initiative is also poised to uplift the role of cow shelters, transforming them into active hubs of economic and cultural activity. The government sees this scheme as a landmark move—not just in promoting holistic health—but in reaffirming India’s indigenous systems of wellness in a contemporary context.
This ambitious step marks a convergence of health, heritage, and livelihood—positioning Uttar Pradesh as a pioneer in fusing tradition with innovation in the Ayurvedic sector.
