In a bid to strengthen its geopolitical position, Armenia hosted the inaugural Yerevan Dialogue 2024, bringing together global leaders, diplomats, and industry experts to address pressing global challenges. Held from September 9 to 11 in the Armenian capital, the forum showcased Armenia’s ambitions to become a key player in regional diplomacy and international cooperation, particularly through deepening its relationship with strategic partners like India.

Amid rising geopolitical tensions, climate concerns, and rapid technological advances, Armenia used the platform to emphasize its role as a bridge between East and West. The country’s growing economy and strategic location were highlighted as critical assets in forging new alliances and promoting stability in an increasingly fragmented global order.

Armenia’s Economic Growth and Strategic Vision

Armenia’s notable economic performance was a central theme throughout the discussions. Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan highlighted the country’s GDP growth, which surged by 12.6% in 2022 and continued its upward trajectory in 2024. “Capitalization of the recorded growth is important for further stable economic development,” Papoyan stated, underlining Armenia’s need to diversify its economy to sustain future growth.

Papoyan pointed to Armenia’s strategic geographic location as a gateway between Europe and Asia. “Armenia is located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia and has absorbed the influence of both value systems,” he said, framing the country as an ideal hub for international trade and cooperation. He stressed that Armenia is now positioning itself to attract foreign investment, particularly in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, IT, and renewable energy.

The minister also highlighted the critical importance of peace in the region, citing infrastructure projects like the North-South road corridor as key initiatives that could turn Armenia into a vital link in regional logistics networks. “All this is impossible without sustainable peace,” Papoyan noted, emphasizing the need for regional stability to foster economic growth.

Strengthening India-Armenia Relations

India’s growing presence in Armenia’s diplomatic and economic agenda was another key highlight of the Yerevan Dialogue. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan met with India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, to discuss ways to further enhance bilateral cooperation. Both ministers hailed the positive trajectory of India-Armenia relations, emphasizing that both nations are eager to deepen collaboration in areas of mutual interest. “Bilateral cooperation between Armenia and India has been developing in several areas of mutual interest,” Mirzoyan stated.

The dialogue also included discussions on regional issues, with Armenia underscoring its commitment to peace and stability in the South Caucasus, a message that resonates strongly with India’s broader foreign policy objectives in the region. The two countries discussed expanding cooperation across multiple platforms, including trade, infrastructure, and technology.

The talks also touched on regional connectivity projects, which both sides see as critical to fostering stability and economic development. The dialogue signaled a shared commitment to strengthening ties as Armenia positions itself as a key player in the South Caucasus.

Geopolitical Context and Global Challenges: A Platform for Global Dialogue

Against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions and global instability, the Yerevan Dialogue addressed the need for stronger international cooperation to tackle critical issues such as climate change, economic disparities, and the ethical implications of emerging technologies. Armenia’s strategic importance in these discussions was evident, with participants recognizing the country’s potential to serve as a diplomatic bridge in a region marked by complex geopolitical dynamics.

Foreign Minister Mirzoyan emphasized the need for dialogue as the path forward. “Dialogue, and even the clash of views, can create opportunities to discover shared truths and formulate common rules,” he said, underscoring Armenia’s belief in diplomacy as a tool for conflict resolution and cooperation.

The Yerevan Dialogue 2024 positioned Armenia as a crucial player in fostering global partnerships and addressing contemporary challenges. With discussions on peace, connectivity, and cooperation, Armenia’s proactive approach in both the regional and global arenas was evident. The strengthening ties between Armenia and India, in particular, reflect the broader vision of shared prosperity and dialogue.
